Post LF: Diesel Mechanic, engine issues
Having some starting/rough running problems with my 99 Ford F250 Super Duty 7.3L diesel truck. Looking for someone who can diagnose a problem. Very hard to start and while driving I get the check engine light and she runs rough, like it's missing or something.

Thanks,
Steve

I"ll ask my buddy tonight if he can recommend any one. My bud works a a heavy equipment mechanic for Weir Construction, and he happens to be rebuilding a ford pick-up. I'm sure he will have some recommendations.

I asked Terry to recommend a diesel mechanic and he laughed at me. They have a pickup that they send to ford for an oil change and a few other things and it usually costs about 2 grand. He's still working on the same truck. Hoping to have it running next week. I'll keep asking around. I"m sure someone on this site should be able to recommend someone.

Dad has a few Dodge Diesel Trucks and for any of the more serious work he only sends it to Royal Garage, and he has buddies in tons of garages over town. The dealer might be expensive but it might be the best option.

could be water in the fuel or a dirty fuel filter

But would that set off the check engine light and be intermittent at the same time?

Will change fuel filter tomorrow, it's been almost 2 years since I changed it last.

Thanks,

I think there is a different light for excess water in the fuel.

anyone know if you need a special scanner for Diesels? My OBD2 scanner doesn't read any codes and a mechanic here in Torbay couldn't pull any codes with his scanner.

I'm thinking it's the glow plugs. Very hard to start when cold and not run for longer then 8-10 hours, sometimes I'm there almost 20 minutes trying to start it. But after it's been running for a while and turned off, it starts up fine.

Thanks,

I had a similar problem with my 06 f250 turned out to be the Fuel injection control module. Could be a number of other things too. Injectors, egr issues, etc.. Its not water in fuel, for one your waring light would come on, and two if your warning light didnt work you would have wrecked a pile of injectors and you definitly wouldnt be able to drive your truck

We have a diesel mechanic that we contract our work out to. He maintains our company vehicles. But he is out of town, should be back in 2 weeks or so i dunno who to suggest really. I had to send a Ford LCF to avalon ford on kenmount rd, to get warranty work done and it wasnt a good experience. Avalon ford in bay roberts has a good diesel mechanic, Sheldon farrell, hes a good guy too, and is very knowledgeable. Id go there before avalon on kenmount rd. Maybe a 45 min drive for you but id rather have someone who knows what theyre doing look at my truck, and the wait time is much less, than on kenmount.
